Home Away From Home

If you're lucky enough to get a role in the city you currently live in, congratulations! You have no need of this article. However, if you're like the rest of us, who audition for roles across the globe hoping for our ships to come in only to land a role half a world away, then you might be in need of some assistance. If it's time to pack your bags and leave behind your Moore Park, Toronto real estate for a few weeks or months, look into one of these types of accommodation in your destination city.

House or Condo for Rent

If your contract is for more than a month or two, a house or condo for rent in Toronto would be a better bet for you than another form of accommodation. Houses and condos give you enough space to spread out and enough control over the look and feel of the place to make it feel like home. You can get them furnished or unfurnished depending on how the owner is offering them, but unless you're willing to go to the trouble of buying and selling a whole home worth of furnishings in just six months, then go for furnished. The easiest way to find a house or condo for rent is through a listings service.

Apartment

Apartments are plentiful and easy to find in cities big enough to have roles to spare for outsiders. The only problem is that they tend to be small and expensive, especially in places like New York. However, Toronto lofts can be a good home for a visiting thespian whose stay in the city is longer than a month. Many apartment owners won't rent for shorter periods than that, and some don't even discuss terms that are less than a year. Find apartments in newspaper classifieds or online, but don't forget to call and ask for the owner's terms beforehand.

Furnished Room

For those on short contracts in expensive places, a home for rent in Puerto Vallarta is a bit beyond your means. Try instead to look for rooms for rent in people's houses or college dorms in the off season. College websites and accommodation-finding services are the best bet for finding a nice family to stay with.

Hotels

Hotels, motels, and bed & breakfasts are appropriate for stays of any length, but keep in mind that for longer stays you're looking at a sizeable bill, even though most hotels offer discounts to long-timers. A Toronto B & B or hotel is also unlikely to have cooking facilities or let you decorate, so it's hard to make it feel like home. They're best for a stay of less than one month and are easily booked through travel agents.
